How did you first become involved in the geospatial community?
I first became involved in the geospatial community when I was studying Geodesy Engineering in Bandung, Indonesia. It was my first time to learn and understand the concept of geospatial information, the process of spatial data collection, the data analysis and visualization, and the technology related to geospatial information.
How would you describe the reputation of open source software in your area?
Timor-Leste is a country in South East Asia that gained its independence in 2002. As a new country, the knowledge and utilization of commercial and open source software is still limited. Although open source software is very helpful, many government institutions in Timor-Leste are not familiar with this software. However, the utilization of open source software is evolving. The biggest land registration project called Sistema Nacional Cadastro (SNC)/National Cadastral System used QGIS to help or support the other software in land data management and visualization. QGIS is also used to digitize and visualise map in the Department of Geodesy and Boundary Delimitation at the National Directorate of Land, Property and Cadastral Services Timor-Leste.
